LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky basketball begins their pursuit of a ninth national championship against Stephen F. Austin in their season opener.
The No. 2 Wildcats won their two exhibition games by a combined 150 points, but Stephen F. Austin will pose a tougher test than Clarion or Asbury. The Lumberjacks lost star guard Thomas Walkup and coach Brad Underwood from their NCAA Tournament team a year ago.
Stephen F. Austin, whose namesake is a graduate of Lexington’s Transylvania University, is coming off three consecutive Southland Conference championships. The Lumberjacks were picked by coaches to finish second in the conference this season.
Kentucky opens the season second in the AP Poll and fourth in the Coaches Poll. The Wildcats are projected to finish first in the SEC led by sophomore point guard Isaiah Briscoe and freshmen De’Aaron Fox, Malik Monk and Bam Adebayo.
