Kentucky rebounded from a gut-wrenching overtime loss to Texas A&M last weekend with an impressive victory over upstart Alabama, 78-53, at Rupp Arena.
The Wildcats (21-7, 11-4 SEC) suffocated Alabama’s offense all night and held the Crimson Tide to just 35 percent shooting. Alabama guard Retin Obasohan was the only Crimson Tide player to crack double figures in scoring.
Kentucky also got an important boost off the bench on Tuesday night as senior forward Alex Poythress returned to action after missing UK’s past five games with a knee injury. Poythress played 17 minutes off the bench and scored 14 points.
The victory puts Kentucky in the driver’s seat for the top seed in the SEC Tournament with three games to play.
MVP: Jamal Murray shot 7-of-14 from the field and poured in 23 points to lead Kentucky in scoring.
Starting lineup: Tyler Ulis, Jamal Murray, Isaiah Briscoe, Isaac Humphries, Marcus Lee.
Off the bench: Alex Poythress, Skal Labissiere, Dominique Hawkins, Charles Matthews, Mychal Mulder, EJ Floreal.
Cleaning up the glass: It was a one-man brigade for Alabama as Obasohan scored 29 of Alabama’s 53 points… Kentucky committed only four turnovers… The Wildcats dominated Alabama despite making just two 3-point field goals…. Four Wildcats scored in double figures
