Latest update: Return not out of the question for E.J. Price
Kentucky tackle E.J. Price has met with Wildcats coach Mark Stoops, and a return to the team isn’t out of the question despite Price saying earlier that he was “stepping away” and UK confirming that he was off the team.
A UK spokeswoman confirmed the latest update Thursday evening. It’s not clear whether Price is officially back on the team, but Stoops wants to help him through this situation.
First update: E.J. Price issued an apology Thursday afternoon on Twitter
“I would like to apologize to my teammates and coaching staff for taking to Twitter and bringing unwanted attention to our locker room. I was extremely stressed and frustrated earlier. I should have handled myself in a much better manner, and for that I apologize. I love my team.”
Kentucky tackle E.J. Price tweeted Thursday that he’s “stepping away” from the program. The announcement came after Price left practice early Thursday, a move that was followed by a sequence of critical tweets.
“I am stepping away from UK football this is completely my decision I have great grades right now and look forward to continuing my academic career if possible,” Price tweeted. “I want to thank UK for giving me this opportunity and being a man of his word. I WAS NOT KICKED OFF I AM LEAVING,” Price wrote in all caps.
That tweet has since been deleted, along with several others posted Thursday morning. “Let’s see what dirt gets thrown on my name next,” Price tweeted. “Respect is a 2 way streak period,” Price wrote in another.
“Not sure where he’s at or what the status is, but we’re trying to help E.J.,” Kentucky coach Mark Stoops told reporters at practice. “I talked to him and he told me he was tired. So I said, ‘We’re all tired.’ ”
Stoops didn’t go into the details, but said he’s trying to protect Price.
A UK spokeswoman confirmed Thursday that Price is no longer on the team.
Price, a 4-star prospect in high school who transferred to Kentucky from Southern Cal, leaves the program without playing a snap for the Wildcats. He sat out last season as a transfer.
Stoops was asked about Price at the start of spring football and said, “We will see.”
“He definitely has some real talent,” Stoops said. “He’s been consistent, you know, for a couple weeks here, for maybe a month or so. There’s been some inconsistencies with him that he needs to iron out that we’re working with him.
“That’s part of our job, to bring guys along, because he certainly has some talent. I like what I see right now, and he definitely can help us if he continues to stay consistent.”
