Team USA’s trio of Wildcats is three wins away from a gold medal at the 2017 FIBA U19 World Cup in Egypt. Kentucky coach John Calipari and freshmen Hamidou Diallo and P.J. Washington have helped lead the Americans to a 4-0 start and a quarterfinal match-up with Germany (3-1) at 3:15 p.m. ET Friday.
With a victory, the U.S. would earn a showdown with the France-Canada winner in Saturday’s semifinals. Argentina-Spain and Lithuania-Italy are the other quarterfinal match-ups on the opposite side of the bracket. Perhaps one of those teams can challenge the Americans, who’ve beaten Iran, Angola, Italy and Mali by an average margin of 45.5 points.
UK sophomore Tai Wynyard and his native New Zealand have had the opposite experience, as they were knocked out of medal contention with a loss to Germany on Wednesday. But they’re not done in Cairo. New Zealand faces Mali in the consolation bracket, where its best possible finish is ninth place, at 10:15 a.m. ET Friday.
Through four games apiece, each of the World Cup Cats has been impressive: Diallo, Washington and Wynyard are averaging a combined 51.6 points, 17.9 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 3.6 steals in just 20.5 minutes per game. Additionally, four 5-star UK recruits are playing for Calipari and Team USA.
Two of them — forward Cameron Reddish (12.8 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.5 spg) and point guard Immanuel Quickley (6.5 ppg, 1.5 apg, 1.0 tpg) — start for the Americans, while forward Louis King (6.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 3.0 apg) and shooting guard Romeo Langford (4.3 ppg) come off the bench. Langford’s playing time has been curtailed by back spasms.
