Two more for gold. Kentucky coach John Calipari and Wildcats freshmen Hamidou Diallo and P.J. Washington have reached the semifinals of the 2017 FIBA U19 World Cup in Egypt with Team USA. They’ll collide with Canada at 2:30 p.m. ET Saturday, meaning Calipari must go through the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2019, R.J. Barrett.
Barrett, a 6-foot-7 wing who could reclassify to 2018 and is very interested in UK, is just 17 years old but the second-leading scorer at the World Cup. He’s averaged 19.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.2 steals for Canada (4-1).
That will be a fun matchup with USA’s own 5-star wing, Cameron Reddish, a 2018 recruit who averages 11.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.8 steals in 12 fewer minutes per game than Barrett. The two Cats, Diallo and Washington, have averaged a combined 25.2 points, 9 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.2 steals through a 5-0 start for the Americans.
Kentucky sophomore Tai Wynyard is also playing well for New Zealand, which meets Puerto Rico in the consolation bracket at 10 a.m. Saturday. You can watch that game right here, in the embedded video bellow. Team USA vs. Canada can only be seen on ESPN3.com and the ESPN app, as YouTube live streams have been disabled in this country since the Round of 16.
