Kentucky Wildcats podcast: Previewing Texas A&M trip, hating on Winter Olympics

LEXINGTON, Ky. — We’ll talk about Kentucky at Texas A&M, but let’s get this out of the way: Kyle Tucker hates the Winter Olympics. Just doesn’t get them. Can’t relate to the cold-weather sports, such as curling. It’s a no for him.

Kyle, our UK beat writer, and host Curtis Burch talk that out and preview Cats-Aggies on the latest episode of Wildcat Country, your daily Kentucky podcast presented by SEC Country. The rundown:

  • Wait, are some fans really mad that UK and the city of Lexington worked out a deal to keep the Cats leasing Rupp Arena for home games through 2033? As in, folks really thought it was possible (or a good idea) to get an on-campus arena built and leave the iconic downtown building (which we grant you is rather ugly and outdated and needs upgrades)? No, this was the right (and only) move.
  • Texas A&M is putting itself back together just in time to host the struggling Wildcats, losers of two straight. The Aggies  (16-8, 5-6 SEC) edged No. 8 Auburn on the road Wednesday night for their third straight league win. The’ve won five of six in conference play since starting 0-5.
  • Remember when Texas A&M looked like a Final Four contender because it had the longest and arguably most talented team in the SEC? Billy Kennedy is working his way back to that. The Aggies are up to 18th in the RPI and have six top-50 wins: at No. 7 Auburn, No. 25 West Virginia, No. 27 Buffalo, No. 28 Missouri, No. 31 Arkansas, at No. 44 USC.
  • Which is to say, as was true when UK couldn’t quite close the deal against 15th-ranked Tennessee on Tuesday, the Cats can solidify their NCAA Tournament standing with a big win in College Station. (It would make for a season sweep of the Aggies.) Lose, and the NIT talk cranks up louder.
  • But seriously, why do people watch the Winter Olympics? Maybe some bobsled, some ski jump, some figure skating — especially if Tanya Harding shows up — but otherwise? Nah. (Says Kyle, to Curtis’ astonishment.)
