LEXINGTON, Ky. — C.J. Conrad has been named the John Mackey Tight End of the Week.
The Kentucky sophomore caught five passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns Saturday against New Mexico State. One score came on a 72-yard catch and sprint down the sideline from quarterback Stephen Johnson in the first quarter.
Conrad led all SEC freshman tight ends with 15 catches for 149 yards and one touchdown in 2015, but entered Saturday’s game with only one catch this season.
“We needed to get him involved,” offensive coordinator Eddie Gran said after Tuesday’s practice. “And you know what, there was some of the same plays where defensively they take stuff away, quite frankly. But this one, it worked out great. So yeah, I was happy for him, and he does have, I think, some confidence.”
