Kentucky’s biggest remaining test — at No. 3 Kansas on Jan. 30 — is one week away, and John Calipari’s team is cruising.
“Anyone who thinks this team is not getting better: You’re not watching,” Calipari said after Saturday’s win.
Venerable ESPN announcer Dick Vitale spoke with Calipari before the weekend, and things got a little testy.
“This is one of your teams that’s not getting better,” Vitale told Calipari.
Peeved, Calipari replied: “So, you’re not watching college basketball that much. What are you talking about?”
Vitale based his opinion on “the Duke game,” according to Calipari. Meaning: How has a team that owned Duke in November lost four games since?
“This team is getting better,” Calipari said. “Derek Willis is better. Tyler’s better. Jamal’s better. Isaiah’s better…”
His list went on, but the point was clear: Calipari is proud of his squad’s direction. The coach also appeared proud of Wildcats fans who braved winter weather to pack Rupp Arena.
“These knuckleheads figured out how to get here,” Calipari said. “I have no idea whether they came two days ago because they heard (about) the storm. Whether they were stuck on a highway and walked here. I don’t know.”
