Beginning this week, Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari gets to spend extended time (20 hours) with his squad, and the first look has not been pretty.
“This year’s team, as we speak, we stink,” Calipari said at the Wildcats’ Tipoff Luncheon in Louisville, Ky., on Monday (via CoachCal.com‘s Metz Camfield).
He later added: “I’m telling you, early on we’re going to be ugly.”
Calipari has a history of outlandish remarks, but these ones in particular should be taken with a grain of salt. Kentucky features several players returning from its 38-1 squad last season, as well as a freshman class that includes CBS pre-season All-Americans Skal Labissiere and Jamal Murray.
Sophomore guard Tyler Ulis will likely spearhead the Wildcats’ attack.
“We gotta hope that Tyler is so good that we get by being ugly,” Calipari said, noting that Ulis has collected 25 assists against three turnovers over the past three practices.
Kentucky opens its exhibition season with the annual Blue-White scrimmage on Oct. 27, and then begins its regular season on Nov. 13 against Albany at Rupp Arena.
