If you didn’t know Malik Monk prior to the North Carolina game, you’re probably pretty familiar with him now.
The prolific Kentucky freshman scored 47 points in the Wildcats’ 103-100 win against the Tar Heels on Saturday. And performances like that don’t go unnoticed.
On Tuesday, it was announced that Monk has been named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association’s Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week. He also earned the association’s award for freshman of the week, which seems like an easy choice given the latter.
Monk set a Kentucky freshman scoring record with the performance, which included 18-of-28 shooting from the floor and 9-of-12 from beyond the arc. He was just seven points short of the Kentucky single-game record, which was set at 54 by Jodie Meeks in a game against Tennessee in 2009.
