DES MOINES — Kentucky and Indiana met for the first time in nearly four years Saturday night, and the Hoosiers moved on to next week’s Sweet 16 in Philadelphia
SEC Country provided live updates from the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday. Here’s a recap:
Live blog (second half)
Indiana 73, Kentucky 67 (FINAL)
Indiana 71, Kentucky 67 (2.9 seconds): Jamal Murray whiffs on a 3-pointer, and this one is all but over after the ball sails out of bounds. Kentucky likely needs a steal and quick bucket to keep this game alive.
Indiana 71, Kentucky 67 (10.4 seconds): Thomas Bryant hits a pair of free throws to keep Kentucky two possessions away.
Indiana 69, Kentucky 67 (11.3 seconds): Tyler Ulis misses a 3-pointer, but Alex Poythress corrals the rebound and gets fouled on the floor. The senior nails two clutch free throws and the Hoosiers are going back to the line momentarily.
Indiana 69, Kentucky 65 (29.7 seconds): Thomas Bryant makes one of two free throws.
Indiana 68, Kentucky 64 (36.4 seconds): Tyler Ulis goes to the line and makes two of two after being hacked in the corner. He’ll return the line for another following the timeout. Both Jamal Murray and Isaiah Briscoe have four fouls.
Indiana 66, Kentucky 60 (1:05 left): Indiana’s Yogi Ferrell makes a clutch assist to Thomas Bryant for a dunk, but Tyler Ulis responds with a 3-pointer to keep the Wildcats afloat late. With eight team fouls, Kentucky is trying to avoid sending Indiana to the line on the next possession.
Indiana 62, Kentucky 54 (3:52 left): Isaiah Briscoe ends a 12-2 Indiana run by forcing his way into the paint for an and-one opportunity. Time is slipping away from the Wildcats, as the Hoosiers (six makes in eight attempts) are finding buckets at the right time.
Indiana 56, Kentucky 50 (6:53 left): A three-point play by Thomas Bryant and a 3-pointer by OG Anunoby have the Indiana faithful going nuts at Wells Fargo Arena. John Calipari calls a timeout to get his team refocused.
Kentucky 50, Indiana 50 (7:44 left): Tyler Ulis just picked up his third foul of the contest while trying to secure a steal. Isaiah Briscoe and Alex Poythress also have three fouls on the night. Indiana’s only player in foul trouble is starting guard Nick Zeisloft, who also has three.
Indiana 45, Kentucky 44 (11:01 left): This one is shaping up to be a classic. The teams trade leads again, with Indiana’s Collin Hartmann netting an impressive layup to go ahead. Kentucky has missed its past four shots, and six of its past seven.
Kentucky 40, Indiana 40 (15:51 left): Kentucky rips off an 8-0 run with a pair of 3-pointers from Jamal Murray (complete with bow-and-arrow celebration) and Tyler Ulis, then a steal-layup combo from Alex Poythress. Indiana’s Yogi Ferrell ends the Hoosiers’ skid with a driving layup. The Kentucky bench is completely fed up with tonight’s referees, who have whistled the Wildcats for several offensive fouls and just made the wrong call on an out-of-bounds ball.
Indiana 38, Kentucky 32 (18:31 left): A travel by Alex Poythress and a pair of missed hooks from Skal Labissiere get Kentucky off to a slow start on offense, while Yogi Ferrell and Nick Zeisloft drain shots to put the Hoosiers up six.
Halftime notes: Tyler Ulis leads all scorers with 12 points … He also leads all players with three assists … Jamal Murray is shooting 2-for-6 from the floor, including a pair of 3-point misfires to end the half … Kentucky holds a slight edge in field goal percentage, 44.0 to 42.9 … Kentucky holds a 19-14 rebounding advantage … Kentucky’s largest first-half lead was seven points, at the 16:35 mark.
Indiana 33, Kentucky 32 (HALFTIME): After Indiana takes the lead with a layup by Robert Johnson, Isaiah Briscoe nails a pair of free throws to tie. The Hoosiers’ Yogi Ferrell puts them back on top, and Jamal Murray misses a pair of 3-pointers — including one that was blocked — in the first half’s final moments.
Kentucky 30, Indiana 28 (1:39 left): John Calipari goes small with Tyler Ulis, Jamal Murray, Charles Matthews and Dominique Hawkins joining Marcus Lee in the lineup. Hawkins hits one of two from the line to keep Kentucky up two.
Kentucky 27, Indiana 24 (3:49 left): Jamal Murray appears to be dealing with some kind of head or eye issue. He left the court massaging his forehead, and a trainer came over to ask if he was alright. He said yes, then just checked back into the game after telling John Calipari, “I’m okay.” Murray still appears slightly dazed.
Kentucky 22, Indiana 17 (7:45 left): Tyler Ulis has been on a different level tonight. The point guard has 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting, including a 3-pointer from the center-court logo. He just traded tough baskets with Indiana star Yogi Farrell. We broke down their All-American matchup this morning.

Kentucky 18, Indiana 13 (9:54 left): This is the track meet we thought we would get. Indiana briefly took the lead on a 3-pointer by Robert Johnson, but Kentucky is currently on a 9-3 run. The Hoosiers have made just one of their past six shots as the pace begins to ramp up.
Kentucky 9, Indiana 4 (15:44 left): Indiana’s Troy Williams blows a dunk, then Isaiah Briscoe finds Marcus Lee for a slam in transition. Lee had recently subbed for Alex Poythress, who caught some flak from John Calipari on the bench for an alleged lack of excitement. With the Hoosiers set for a trip to the line, Poythress is re-entering the game for Skal Labissiere.
Kentucky 4, Indiana 2 (17:44 left): Alex Poythress opens the scoring with a pair of free throws, and the teams trade baskets — including a long 2-point jumper from Isaiah Briscoe — to get things started in Des Moines.
Notes: Kentucky is making its 56th NCAA tournament appearance (123-49 all-time) … Indiana is making its 39th NCAA tournament appearance (65-33 all-time) … Kentucky and Indiana have met 56 times since 1924, with Kentucky owning a 32-24 edge … The schools last played in the 2012 Sweet 16, a game Kentucky won, 102-90 … The game features three All-Americans: Kentucky guards Tyler Ulis and Jamal Murray, and Indiana guard Yogi Ferrell.
