Kentucky basketball has not one, but two of the nation’s top players through the first two months of the season.
Freshmen Malik Monk and De’Aaron Fox are both on the midseason watch list for the Oscar Robertson Trophy. The U.S. Basketball Writers Association gives the award to the nation’s No. 1 player. Both are also on the watch list for the Wayman Tisdale Award, which goes to the top freshman in college basketball.
Kentucky is the only SEC school with players on either watch list. UCLA is the only other school with more than one candidate for either award.
Monk is in the top 20 nationally in scoring at 21.7 points per game. That would be the best by any college player ever under John Calipari.
Fox is currently averaging 6.0 assists per game, which is top-20 in Division I college basketball. He’s also averaging 16.2 points and 1.6 steals per game.
The only Kentucky player to ever win the Robertson Trophy was Anthony Davis in 2012. He and John Wall (2010) both won the Tisdale Award during their respective freshman seasons.
The USBWA will present Oscar Robertson Trophy on March 31. The presentation date for the Wayne Tisdale Award has yet to be announced.
