The Internet is going to be so disappointed.
Ex-Kentucky stud and current Sacramento Kings superstar DeMarcus Cousins has been stoking the NBA trade rumor fires for quite some time, but it appears the much-maligned All-Star might not be headed anywhere but to his local Sacramento-area bank.
Cousins reportedly intends to sign “a massive, max-money extension, estimated at roughly $207 million during the offseason that will keep the big man in a Kings uniform long-term,” according to CSN Calilfornia’s James Ham. To put that in perspective, that would be the richest contract in NBA history if signed today.
Based on the current NBA collective bargaining agreement (CBA), Cousins would be in line for a maximum contract extension with the Kings that could reach approximately five years and $130 million when he becomes a free agent after next season. That would be a lucrative deal, but pales in comparison to Memphis Grizzlies star Mike Conley’s record five-year, $152 million deal signed last summer.
But under the new CBA, Cousins would be eligible for the new designated player veteran extension — or a “super-max” contract, as it’s being commonly referred to — which means he could sign that $207 million contract extension as soon as this summer.
While that contract would shatter the previous record if signed today, he likely won’t be the only player to sign that type of deal when free agency rolls around. But it’s still a boatload of money for Boogie, and underscores his tremendous value — character flaws or not.
Of course, it could all just be a ploy by Cousins to get paid before a trade, considering the Kings are the only team who can offer Cousins anything remotely close to that kind of contract. But Cousins has expressed a desire to stay in Sacramento before, and that the Kings have held off this long on trading their star big man says a lot about their willingness to keep him around even longer.
We won’t know anything for sure until this summer, and a lot can change in a few months’ time. So until then, we’ll just appreciate Boogie being Boogie and pray he gets voted on to the All-Star team so he drops an R&B album as a thank you.
