Kentucky big man Marcus Lee withdrew his name from the 2016 NBA Draft on Wednesday and announced he would seek a transfer. It looks like Lee will have a lot of options to choose from when he selects a new program.
Georgia Tech, Baylor, Kansas, Gonzaga and Iowa State have already reached out to Lee, according to a report from Rivals’ Jeff Rabjohns.
Despite having just one semester at Kentucky left before graduating, Lee will sit out a year before resuming basketball activities in a different location. He wanted to be closer to his home in Antioch, Cailf.
“I want to thank the University of Kentucky, the basketball staff and the Big Blue Nation for supporting me over the years,” Lee said in a statement on Wednesday. “I’m sorry it took me so long to come to this decision, but I’m trying to do what’s right for me and my family. I’ll always think fondly of my time at Kentucky.”
The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 3.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and one block over three seasons with the Wildcats, but there could have been a logjam for playing time at his position. Kentucky will add three forwards — Bam Adebayo, Wenyen Gabriel and Sacha Killeya-Jones — next season that are ranked in the top eight of the 247Sports Composite.
“We talked it through together and discussed the team next season, which he (Lee) said had no bearing on his decision,” Kentucky coach John Calipari said. “I also told him he was a semester away from graduating. With that said, he was still adamant that, after the combine experience, a year off and regrouping would be the best thing. As always, I support my players and their decisions.”
