A Kentucky fan who made the trip to South Carolina for the Wildcats’ game Saturday against the Gamecocks was hospitalized after being hit by a stray bullet in a shooting that injured eight people in Columbia.
As reported by Kentucky Sports Radio’s Drew Franklin on Saturday, Denise Massey of Paris, Ky., Massey and her boyfriend, Jimmy Brannon, were walking back to their hotel Friday night when Massey was shot.
SEC Country’s Joe Mussatto confirmed with Kentucky that athletic director Mitch Barnhart visited Massey in the hospital sometime Saturday.

I spoke with Brannon via phone on Saturday and he told me the bullet stuck Massey’s cheek area and exited through the back of her head; but, miraculously, did not strike the spinal column.
“She has no neurological dysfunction,” he said. “She can move all extremities, everything works, all that. So that’s great news.”
Massey remains in ICU, per Franklin. The Columbia Police Department released images of “vehicles of interest.” However, no arrests have been made as of Saturday evening, per Franklin.
