LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky spares no expense for Big Blue Madness, its annual recruiting extravaganza disguised as the basketball team’s first public practice for the fans. Friday night’s big flourish: famous boxing announcer Michael Buffer.
The Wildcats dropped a microphone from their new center-hung scoreboard at Rupp Arena and shined a spotlight on Buffer as he introduced coach John Calipari and the players, then tweaked his signature line and bellowed, “Let’s get rrrrready for rrrroundball!”
That wasn’t cheap. Kentucky paid Buffer a $15,000 appearance fee, plus lodging and local ground transportation, the school told SEC Country on Saturday. The final tally for this year’s Big Blue Madness, which often runs in the quarter-of-a-million-bucks range, was not yet available.
Whatever the total cost, it almost certainly will be worth it to Calipari, who is hosting six of the top 25 recruits in the Class of 2017 this weekend.
