LaVar Ball, the father of soon-to-be NBA draft lottery pick Lonzo Ball, is a polarizing figure. So much so, that his son’s opponents have used him as fuel when they battle.
Former Kentucky guard De’Aaron Fox is one of them, as he had one personal goal when he took the floor in the Wildcats’ Sweet 16 game against Ball’s UCLA Bruins.
“Shut LaVar Ball up,” Fox said in a feature with Sports Illustrated.
He did a good enough job, too. Kentucky went on to defeat UCLA, 86-75, behind Fox’s 39 points.
For Fox, the question is how LaVar became so famous.
“In the last year, he became relevant for some reason,” Fox said. “When I knew Lonzo in high school, I’d never seen his dad before. He went crazy this year. I guess when your son is a lottery pick, that gives you a lot of confidence.”
While the boisterous father might have been quiet during the Bruins’ loss to Kentucky, he has been the opposite since, and the momentum will hit a peak during the upcoming NBA draft.
If LaVar has any words to say about Fox, who is also expected to be one of the top picks in the draft, he might want to keep it silent after what happened in March.
