LEXINGTON Ky. — It’s not the same as going into Saturday with a quarterback controversy, but Kentucky will take the field this weekend with a predicament at punter.
Settling on the starter will be a game-time decision, coach Mark Stoops said after Thursday’s practice.
“We had a good feeling but we’ll see how they’re hitting Saturday,” he said.
The battle is between freshman Grant McKinniss and sophomore Bryan Kirche. As for how Stoops’ fourth-down calls might change depending on UK’s punting situation?
“I’ve been pretty aggressive as it was,” Stoops said. “I’m a genius when it works, right? You guys are really good to point it out,” he said, drawing laughter from the media. “But if I didn’t go for it I’d be boring and conservative, so — nah. We’ll see. Hopefully you play good enough football really across the board for me to make those decisions straight up, the way you should if you got a quality team. Sometimes you feel like you’re behind, you’ve got to take some shots and when they backfire, they backfire. So hopefully when you’re a good football team it leads to making those decisions a lot easier.”
