LEXINGTON, Ky. — The last full practice of the week wrapped up Thursday evening and coach Mark Stoops took his last round of questions.
The coach spoke less than three minutes but here’s what he said before UK’s 4 p.m. matchup Saturday with New Mexico State.
- Stoops said nothing would change on Saturday as to him taking a bigger role on defense: “No. Not on game day,” he said. “We did some different things this week that I already addressed but on the game day itself, no. Nothing different.” But then there was a longer pause and Stoops added something of note: “With the exception of me, I will be more active with play calling,” he said.
- Saturday is Heroes Day at Commonwealth Stadium and police, firefighters and first responders came out to watch practice this week: “It’s a real honor to have heroes like that here, and with the police and firefighters and everybody we’ve had this week,” Stoops said. “It’s been really good for our players to see them and just to invite people out to watch some practice. It’s been a nice week.”
- Stoops was asked about sophomore QB Drew Barker and if he can bounce back from the Florida loss: “He’s been working hard,” Stoops said. “Had a good week of practice and I anticipate that he’ll bounce back well.”
