LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Wildcats have transitioned from fall camp into full game preparation for Southern Miss, their Week 1 opponent with an offense Kentucky knows firsthand.
Shannon Dawson was fired as Kentucky’s offensive coordinator after last season and he landed in Hattiesburg, Miss. to take on the same role with the Golden Eagles. It’s changed how UK defensive coordinator D.J. Eliot’s side has watched film this week.
“We watch our own offense from last year for some of the scheme and then we watch the Southern Miss film from last year for some of the personnel,” Eliot said.
Eliot and Dawson will try to outthink each other in the matchup, but the knowledge of one another offsets.
“I think our advantage is the same as their advantage,” Eliot said. “I think I know him, but he knows me, so I don’t think it’s one way or another.”
What we know:
- Eliot mentioned Courtney and Courtney as guys who have stood out to him during the last few days of camp. Miggins, a senior defensive tackle, is taking on a leadership role in camp and Love, a transfer from Nebraska, will be making his UK debut next Saturday after sitting out last season because of transfer rules.
- The linebacking corps is a question mark for the Kentucky defense, but Eliot was happy at how the position’s depth has progressed: “They got better,” Eliot said. “By the end of camp, they were catching on to what we were doing.”
- The Wildcats have turned all their focus to preparing for Sept. 3. Sophomore cornerback Derrick Baity wasn’t willing to guess as to how much film he’s watched of Southern Miss.
Quote of the day:
Sophomore cornerback Derrick Baity:
“I didn’t even know the game was next Saturday, for real. I was just like so into practice and film but now they say next Saturday — it’s real.”
