LEXINGTON, Ky. — Big Bertha is gone and Kentucky is already looking for a nickname for its replacement.
A video board was unveiled Sunday afternoon at Rupp Arena to cap a $15 million technology upgrade. New sound and light systems along with fresh blue paint on the ceiling were also debuted.
Here’s the video presentation of the new board:
It’s 34 feet wide and 28 feet tall, and apparently it needs a name. Big Bertha long hung from the spot its upgrade now occupies. The cluster of white speakers has been replaced by an LED video display.

So, in honor of Big Bertha, the Lexington Center Board of Directors announced a public contest to name Rupp Arena’s newest addition. The contest will begin Oct. 14th at Big Blue Madness and will end on Nov. 14 with the winner announced Dec. 3 at the home game against UCLA.
“What better way to welcome the arrival of this new technology to its new home above center court than by giving it a name?” Brent Rice, chairman of the board of directors, said.
Fans can submit their name entry by going to rupparena.com/nameit or mailing the submission to Lexington Center’s address at 430 W. Vine St. Lexington, KY 40507.
