John Calipari is ready for the 2016-17 season to start, so much so that he is taking his own personal training to the next level.
Calipari posted an entertaining video Thursday morning while running on the treadmill. Cal is trying to get in better shape for next season when he might actually have to coach the Wildcats.
“I got to be ready to coach,” Calipari said, showing a pretty good sense of humor throughout the video. “It’s not like this year. I had someone else coach the team,” Calipari joked as he panned the camera to sophomore guard Tyler Ulis, who joked back that he deserved a salary.
Ulis declared for the NBA draft after being named the SEC Player of the Year last season. Calipari said the team that takes Ulis this summer will be getting an incredible floor general.
“I hate losing that guy,” Calipari said. “Someone in the NBA is going to have a coach on the floor. He and I are joking, he coached our team. It was great for me to empower a guy like that and very rarely am I able to do that.”
But now Cal knows he’s got to get back to work.
“I don’t have an assistant coach who thinks he was the head coach, Tyler Ulis,” Calipari said.
The other reason behind Calipari’s intensified workout regimen is simple: At 57, Cal wants to coach at UK until he’s in his 70s. He wonders what he’ll be like, and how many championships, draft picks and whatever else the Kentucky program will boast in 20 years.
He said “no doubt” he’ll have 12 guys playing in the NBA All-Star Game.
The question will be whether Calipari can maintain that level of success for the next two decades. Judging by the video, he means business.
