LEXINGTON, Ky. – If you ever grow tired of those walk-on-gets-surprise-scholarship videos, consult a doctor immediately to discuss treatment options for your black heart. Those of you with souls, however, surely enjoyed seeing Kentucky wide receiver and special teams captain Charles Walker’s big moment Friday night.
“Just went in for another team meeting and didn’t really think anything was going to happen,” said Walker, a junior from Louisville who has played in all 24 games of his UK career, producing nine tackles, six receptions and three punt returns. “Slowly, we started talking about what I’ve seen in all those videos where a walk-on gets awarded a scholarship. … My heart was about to jump out of my body.”
Then head coach Mark Stoops delivered the news and Walker’s UK teammates went wild.

“I was crying a little bit,” said Walker, whose parents were out to dinner celebrating his sister’s engagement when it happened. “So it was kind of a double-doozy for them. They were happy for that, happy for me. They were extremely happy. They were about to take an Uber all the way to Lexington from Louisville to come get dinner with me, and I said, ‘I gotta be up at 6 (a.m.), so I wouldn’t do that.’”
