Saturday, the Georgia Bulldogs got one of college football’s most stubborn monkeys off its back. UGA beat Alabama 28-7, and the Dawgs were crowned SEC champions in Atlanta. Georgia had previously lost 10 of the last 11 to the Crimson Tide, including a 24-21 loss at Sanford Stadium earlier this season.
After the win, Kirby Smart had some words specifically for Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson and confronted the junior quarterback.
In life, and especially in sports, humility is important. When everything is going right, and you’re on top, it’s crucial to remember that you won’t always be. Ty Simpson may have learned that the hard way on Saturday.
Rewind the clock back two months. The Tide came into Athens for the first time since 2015 and snapped the Bulldogs’ 33-game home win streak. Simpson had a stellar game, carving up the UGA defense for 276 yards and three total touchdowns on 24 of 38 passing.
Post-victory, Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson committed what many in DawgNation view as a cardinal sin. Simpson tore off a piece of Sanford Stadium’s hedges and flaunted it in celebration. Georgia fans — and clearly the team — did not find the gesture amusing. Opposing players have done this before, but it’s a bold move, especially for anyone who might face the Bulldogs again. Simpson likely didn’t expect to reap what he sowed quite so soon.
Georgia’s defense wreaked havoc on Simpson in the SEC championship. Crushing hits, an interception and an under 50% completion percentage were not the QB’s ideal Saturday, I’m sure.
After the punishment was over, Kirby apparently warned the QB not to disrespect UGA again.
According to Radi Nabulsi of Rivals, in the locker room post-game, Smart told his players what he told Simpson:
“I went up to Ty Simpson and told him he was a great player and all that, but not to ever touch our ******* hedges again.”
Nabulsi went on to say that Kirby was most likely joking with his team, as the conversation between Georgia’s HC and Alabama’s QB after the game looked respectful.

Here’s a look at that moment:
I’ll choose to take Kirby’s word for it.
