The No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs (12-1) have punched their ticket to the College Football Playoff and earned a first-round bye. UGA will begin its title run at the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day against the winner of No. 6 Tulane (11-2) and No. 10 Ole Miss (11-1). With a little less than a month before the Dawgs take the field in New Orleans, belief is growing that Georgia may receive a monumental and unexpected addition for its championship pursuit.
The Bulldogs’ offense has been high-powered this season and averages 32.3 points per game, ranking 22nd nationally. Quarterback Gunner Stockton leads the unit. UGA has competed in multiple offensive shootouts and has risen to the challenge. Against No. 5 Ole Miss, Georgia scored on every possession until the final kneel to complete a 43-35 comeback at Sanford Stadium. In 2025, the Dawgs have benefited from a much-improved run game and a major portal addition in wide receiver Zachariah Branch, who has become the go-to target in big moments. Still, Mike Bobo’s offense has fallen into slumps at times, including against Georgia Tech, due to the lack of a vertical passing game. Georgia will almost certainly need that area to come alive to win a national championship.

Help may be on the way.
On the third play from scrimmage in Georgia’s Oct. 18 shootout against Ole Miss, star wideout Colbie Young caught a 36-yard pass that put the Bulldogs in scoring position. He didn’t play another snap. Young suffered a lower-leg fracture on the deep shot, and the severity of the injury led most to assume the senior had played his final down of college football. It was a major blow, as Young was UGA’s primary vertical threat.
Before that game, the Miami transfer had totaled 336 yards and a touchdown on 23 receptions.
Kirby Smart updates injury status of star Georgia wide receiver Colbie Young
But speculation has recently intensified that Young may not be done. With the CFP pushing the season deeper into January — and UGA not playing again until New Year’s Day — belief is growing that Young could return for a championship run. The senior has appeared to recover quickly in recent weeks. He remains in a walking boot but has been moving well.
On Sunday, Kirby Smart provided an update on Young’s chances of returning.
“We went over some injuries today, and his name came up,” Smart said. “I think it would be a stretch, and we’re so far off. I was not thinking of being able to get him back when the injury occurred in the initial timeline.”
It sounds like Young’s return would be even more likely on Jan. 8 if Georgia were to advance to the CFP semifinals. We are still almost a month out from UGA’s playoff run, so there is no telling how much progress the star WR can make in that time.
“There has been some optimism with his rehab and his recovery, but it was more for after the initial game if we were able to advance,” Smart added. “But again, I don’t know. I think we’ll find out over the next, you know, 20-something days, we’ll find a lot more out.”
Having a consistent deep threat on the field could be the missing piece to an unstoppable offense. Young suiting up for the “G” one last time would be a huge win for the Bulldogs.
Huge, like three national championships in five years.
