One Georgia player named preseason college football All-American

Georgia Bulldog safety KJ Bolden continues to stack recognition ahead of the 2026 season. He has been named a preseason All-American by ESPN. The honor further solidifies Bolden as one of the emerging premier defensive backs in college football.

ESPN’s Mark Schlabach highlighted both Bolden’s versatility and production when explaining the selection of the defensive back.

“Bolden had to wear many hats in Georgia’s secondary because of injuries last season,” Schlabach wrote. “He finished with 76 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, five pass breakups, and two interceptions. He has been great in run support with 135 tackles in his first two seasons and has room to grow in coverage.”

Other Georgia players that Schlabach considered for the preseason All-America team

Bolden was Georgia’s only player to make the preseason team. Other players were considered, but did not make the cut.

Other Georgia players mentioned:

  • OG Dontrell Glover
  • C Drew Bobo
  • DT Elijah Griffin
  • LB Raylen Wilson
  • CB Ellis Robinson IV

Georgia secondary stability built on versatility

That versatility is what separates Bolden from many safeties nationally. Injuries forced Georgia head coach Kirby Smart to shuffle personnel throughout the secondary last season. Bolden responded by taking on multiple responsibilities. These included rotating between deep safety looks, playing down in the box, and serving as a reliable run defender. His 76 tackles in 2025 were not empty numbers; they reflected consistent involvement in run fits and open-field tackling.

Over his first two seasons in Athens, Bolden has totaled 135 tackles. This underscores his physical presence near the line of scrimmage. For a defensive back in Georgia’s system, that level of production speaks to both trust from the coaching staff and a willingness to play downhill. He has shown strong instincts, triggering against the run, and has proven capable of limiting explosive plays after initial contact.

Georgia run defense impact and production profile

At the same time, Schlabach’s comment about growth in coverage hints at Bolden’s ceiling. With two interceptions and five pass breakups last season, he has flashed playmaking ability but still has room to elevate his impact in deep coverage and ball production. If he takes a step forward in that area, his overall profile could shift from “versatile and dependable” to “dominant and complete.”

Georgia defensive ceiling hinges on coverage growth

Being named a preseason All-American places Bolden among the elite defensive backs entering the year. For Georgia, it signals continuity and leadership on the back end of the defense. A unit that often sets the tone for the Bulldogs’ championship expectations.
