LSU checks in on nation’s top junior college defensive end

The LSU assistant coaches are out on the recruiting trail, and they made an important stop on Monday afternoon.

LSU defensive line coach Ed Orgeron stopped in at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to see the nation’s No. 1 weak-side defensive end Isaiah Buggs.

The three-star prospect tweeted that both LSU and Ole Miss were in attendance on Monday.

Buggs is a Ruston, La., native, and was long considered a Tigers lean.

However, the 6-foot-5, 280-pounder left his hometown Tigers out of his top 10 list earlier in April, which was a bit of a head-scratcher considering his long and solid relationship with the school.

Orgeron was well aware that Buggs was dissatisfied with where his relationship with LSU was at this juncture in the recruiting process, which fueled the defensive line coach to make an in-person visit to the defensive end.

Buggs also took in LSU’s spring game last weekend, which shows that his relationship with his hometown school is getting back on the right track.

Buggs is the No. 7 overall junior college prospect in the Class of 2017 and is being courted by no shortage of SEC powers. That includes Alabama, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Auburn, Arkansas, Florida and UGA, among numerous others.

However, LSU holds a unique edge with Buggs that it is trying to regain. Orgeron, LSU’s recruiting ace, is spearheading Buggs’ recruitment and should get the Tigers back in the thick of the race for the prized defensive end sooner rather than later.

Buggs plans to make numerous visits to schools coming up later on this spring, and LSU is a prime candidate to earn one.
