The season is less than a month away for most teams, which means SEC running will soon be unleashed.
The conference is full of talented playmakers in the backfield, and Fox Sports thinks very highly of three groups in particular: LSU, Tennessee and Georgia.
In Bruce Feldman‘s “Top 10 running back groups in college football“ list, LSU earned the No. 1 spot. Feldman pointed to Leonard Fournette’s 1,953 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns, but also mentioned rising sophomore Derrius Guice’s 8.55 yards per carry mark from a year ago. Guice rushed for 436 yards and three touchdowns on 51 carries in 2015.
Tennessee was the fourth-ranked rushing combo behind the production of Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara. The two combined for almost 2,000 yards last season, and Feldman referred to Hurd as a “freak athlete and underrated receiver”. Four-star freshman Carlin Fils-aime was also included in the analysis as someone who could add depth behind the duo.
Georgia was the last team to make the cut, but Feldman did write that the Bulldogs would have been higher on the list if both Nick Chubb and Sony Michel were healthy. Chubb is looking to return from a significant knee injury suffered against Tennessee last season, while Michel is recovering from a broken forearm. Both players’ statuses for the season opener remain in question, but Georgia coach Kirby Smart has said Chubb is more likely to play than Michel against North Carolina.
