BATON ROUGE, La. — The first member of LSU basketball’s recruiting class of 2017 has signed his paperwork.
Brandon Rachal, a 4-star guard from Natchitoches, La., faxed in his letter of intent during the early signing period this week and will join the Tigers basketball team starting next season.
“Brandon’s a guy that will bring a physical presence to our team next season on the wing,” LSU coach Johnny Jones said. “He has unbelievable size and strength. He has the physique of a guy that we generally try to use in the season. He will come in with the type of size and strength like no other.”
Listed as a combo guard capable of playing multiple positions, Rachal is graded as the No. 3 player in Louisiana and the No. 6 combo guard for the Class of 2017. At 6-foot-6 and 220 pounds, Rachal compares favorably from a size perspective to LSU freshman Wayde Sims.
Rachal had other offers from basketball powerhouses such as Virginia, Texas and Oklahoma State, as well as SEC competitors Texas A&M, Auburn and Vanderbilt. Texas A&M was the only school that Rachal took an official visit to other than LSU.
Assuming no players leave for the NBA or transfer to other schools, Rachal will come in and compete with a logjam of guards, including sophomores Antonio Blakeney and Brandon Sampson, both of whom are shoo-ins to start for the Tigers this season.
