Do you consider Odell Beckham Jr. to be an icon?
To Beckham’s agent, that’s what the former LSU wide receiver has become after a huge deal with Nike.
In a piece by ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, Beckham’s agent, Zeke Sandhu, said Beckham’s ability to land the most lucrative shoe deal ever for an NFL player put the New York Giants star into icon status.
“It was a long process,” Sandhu told ESPN of the deal. “This proved he’s an icon.”
Beckham inked a reported five-year agreement worth $25 million with Nike on Tuesday. As part of the deal, Beckham will become a prominent figure in Nike’s global marketing strategy. So prepare to see a bunch of Beckham in the near future.
Frankly, it’s debatable whether the former LSU player is an icon. Yes, his star has risen since the Giants made him the 12th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He has 4,122 yards receiving and 35 touchdowns. In addition, he is a three-time Pro Bowl player.
But the word “icon” should be reserved for players who have accomplished more than Beckham. Is he one of the NFL’s best players ever? No way. Perhaps he will reach that point one day, but he still has so much more to prove.
Certainly, Beckham has earned national prominence. But let’s pump the breaks on the icon talk.
