Jimbo Fisher is the dream candidate for LSU. The Florida State coach has already won a national championship and multiple ACC titles. Fisher also has ties to LSU, as he once served as their offensive coordinator.
But it’s also plausible that Fisher turns down Athletic Director Joe Alleva. He’s already done so, as LSU heavily pursued Fisher at the end of last season.
If LSU is unable to land Fisher, it has a list of potential back up candidates, per Sonny Shipp of 247Sports. The list includes: LSU interim coach Ed Orgeron, Houston coach Tom Herman, North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora, Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente and potentially Colorado head coach Mike Macintyre.
Orgeron has led the Tigers to a 4-2 record since taking over for Les Miles in September. For Orgeron to be considered for the job, he would need to beat Texas A&M on this Saturday to finish with a 5-2 record. The Tigers lost to Florida 16-10, as running back Derrius Guice was stuffed on the final play of the game.
Herman is coming off a win over previously No. 5 Louisville. The former Ohio State offensive coordinator guided the Cougars to wins over Florida State and Oklahoma as well. Herman is widely considered to be the favorite for the Texas job, should it become open. Charlie Strong and the Longhorns lost again yesterday, as they fell to Kansas.
Fedora has spent the past five seasons at North Carolina. The Tar Heels played for the ACC title last season and are 8-3 this season. Fedora was born in College Station and has spent time as Florida’s offensive coordinator. The Texas A&M job could come open, as reports indicated Kevin Sumlin could be in trouble with a loss to LSU.
Fuente is in his first season at Virginia Tech and has the Hokies a win away from winning the ACC Coastal division. Prior to this year, Fuente was the head coach at Memphis.
Macintyre has led Colorado to an impressive turnaround, as the Buffaloes are ranked in the top 10 of the College Football Playoff rankings. If Colorado wins against Utah on this upcoming Saturday, the Buffaloes would win their first PAC-12 South crown.
LSU takes on Texas A&M on Thursday night. Per the report, LSU would like to move quickly in naming a new head coach.
