It has been nearly a year since Justin Watkins de-committed from LSU.
Watkins, a 4-star athlete from Florida, reopened his recruitment just days after National Signing Day in 2016, which led to his commitment to in-state power Florida State in June.
The 5-foot-11, 172-pounder from Vanguard (Fla.) High School remains open to the Tigers, who he said continue to recruit him.
“I just jumped the gun, to be honest,” Watkins told SEC Country about his original pledge to LSU in April 2015.
“It was my dream school. I got the offer, and I just committed. LSU is still an option for me. I haven’t shut down my recruitment at all.”
In fact, the Florida State pledge reconnected with primary recruiter Corey Raymond just a few weeks ago.
While LSU was in Orlando, Fla., preparing for the Citrus Bowl, Watkins reunited with Raymond and took in one of the Tigers’ practices.
In a 2018 recruiting class loaded with 5-star cornerback Kelvin Joseph and 4-star safeties Caden Sterns and Nadab Joseph, LSU still is courting Watkins.
“I was actually at the bowl practice,” Watkins said. “Coach Raymond is my guy. He wants me to play defensive back, but I can do it all, though.”
In a defense manned by Dave Aranda and an offense designed by Matt Canada, Watkins, an Under Armour All-American, could be especially effective. After all, he’s the No. 1-ranked athlete in the class, likely deserving of that fifth star by the time camp season rolls around.
LSU’s defensive back board is loaded in 2018. Keep these prospects in mind:
- Justin Watkins, 4-star ATH (Florida State commit)
- Pat Surtain Jr., 5-star CB
- Anthony Cook, 5-star CB
- Verone McKinley III, 4-star CB
- Jalen Green, 4-star CB
- Corione Harris, 4-star CB
- Trent Gordon, 3-star CB
The Tigers are not yet done with their pursuit of Watkins, either.
