Ridley could help ease the potential loss of Tevin Coleman, who was injured on Sunday.
Ridley was drafted in the third round in 2011 out of LSU by the Patriots. After four productive seasons, including a 2014 Super Bowl title while he was on injured reserve.
The running back missed half the season with the New York Jets last year because of injury. He was cut by the Detroit Lions and Indianapolis Colts in training camp.
In Baton Rogue, Ridley rushed for 1,419 yards and 19 touchdowns in three seasons.
