When it comes to college football drama on social media, things aren’t always as they seem.
Nebraska linebacker commitment Avery Roberts made headlines on Wednesday afternooon for a tweet about putting Leonard Fournette to sleep if he met LSU’s standout running back on the playing field.
The tweet was quickly deleted, but screenshots were taken and the comment ultimately made its way to Fournette by Wednesday evening.
Instead of giving the kid a hard time publicly, the potential Heisman Trophy candidate chose to take the high road.
Fournette chose to handle it privately, sending Roberts a direct message with acknowledgement that he knew the comment was a joke, as well as some words of encouragement.
Roberts decided to share a screenshot of that exchange late Wednesday night.
It was a strong move by Fournette, showing both character and class amidst a small social media frenzy that could have easily turned ugly had he not observed the humor in the situation.
Fournette rushed for 1,953 yards and 22 touchdowns during a prolific 2015 season, and expectations are sky-high for what is expected to be his final season of college football this fall.
