LSU athletic director Joe Alleva joined Culotta and The Prince on ESPN 104.5 on Thursday morning to discuss all things LSU football.
Among the topics discussed are Les Miles’ departure, Ed Orgeron’s changes being implemented this week and what the coaching search will be like.
Here’s a transcript of the interview:
What do you think about Orgeron’s future with the team?
It’s too early to make any decision like that. We have nine weeks left in the season and we’ll see how things go. As of the first three or four days, I think he’s done a good job energizing the building and making some changes that will have some long-term effects on the players. At end of the day, it’s putting the players in the best position to win. We’ll see how it goes. We have eight games left. He has a great opportunity to show what he can do and turn this ship around.
What was this weekend like for you?
It’s hard. Whenever you make a change, it’s hard. You affect people’s lives and it’s not a lot of fun. I made the decision to go forward and make a change. I met with Les on Sunday and we moved forward. We put Coach O in charge. I have a lot of respect for Les, but the way he handled this whole thing has been outstanding and full of class.
Will Miles coach again?
I definitely think he wants to coach again. I think it has to be the right situation, but he wants to coach again.
What are your thoughts on this team, this season?
We’ve got eight games left — that means we have eight opportunities to win. There’s a lot of goals that can still be achieved here. I’m looking forward to a change in the culture of the program because Ed is instituting change, no doubt about it.
What are the coaching search parameters?
Someone that’s a good fit for LSU. Someone that’s a proven winner that can lead this program. You have to be able to recruit, motivate, lead, deal with the media, deal with alumni and fans. You’re basically a CEO, and that’s what I’m looking for — someone that can lead us into the future and promote excellence. Our program has to be about excellence and winning at the highest level.
Goal for naming a new coach?
That’s an interesting question because it depends on how things go. I think it’s really hysterical how everyone’s predicting who the next coach will be. I’m doing my due diligence and my homework. Coaches at other schools could be coaching into January, so you don’t know how that’ll play out. If you go after a coach coaching in a big bowl game, is that coach going to leave him team before a bowl game? I don’t know … I sort of doubt it.
Who is leading the search?
I’m the search.
What are the thoughts on Orgeron’s changes with the staff, the offense?
I hope so. I think that Steve Ensminger will maybe use a lot of the same plays, but the plays are what you call them. If you call a play-action pass on first down, maybe it has a chance to succeed. If it’s third-and-1 and you call a play-action pass, maybe it has a chance to succeed.
Do coaches reach out to you?
Almost all coaches are represented by agents, so you may not talk to a coach for a long time but you can talk to agents. Agents that represent people that may be interested in this job may reach out.
What is the perception of the LSU job?
I always have thought that LSU is one of the top five jobs in the country. I perceive it as one of the best in the country.
What is the hiring process like for you personally?
It gets me excited because it’s the biggest part of my job. Hiring good people is one of the biggest parts, and in this case, the biggest part. Whoever we pick to lead this program going into the future is huge to not only the athletic department to the whole university and the whole state for that matter.
What will the atmosphere be like this Saturday?
It’s the kids you’re supporting when you come out to Tiger Stadium and I hope the fans will support them the rest of the season. It’s important. The atmosphere our fans produce in Tiger Stadium is unlike any other.
