BATON ROUGE, La. — LSU’s rise in the AP Top 25 continues.
Behind a 45-21 victory over Texas A&M Saturday, LSU jumped two spots to No. 17 in the AP Top 25 this week. The Tigers (9-3, 6-2 SEC) are one of five SEC squads ranked in the AP Poll, along with Auburn, Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi State. Only Stanford and Notre Dame rank higher than LSU among three-loss teams.
For the second year in a row, LSU finished the season with a huge offensive showing against Texas A&M. Quarterback Danny Etling had the best day of his LSU career, throwing for 347 yards and 3 touchdowns, while running backs Derrius Guice and Darrel Williams both went over 100 yards with 1 touchdown apiece. Etling’s 3 passing touchdowns went to Russell Gage, DJ Chark and J.D. Moore, all of whom celebrated their senior nights with a score.
Defensively, sophomore linebacker Devin White led the way once again with another 13-tackle performance, adding 1.5 tackles for loss and the first interception of his college career to ice the victory. Nose tackle Greg Gilmore also had a productive senior night, recording 5 tackles with a sack and 2 TFLs. Cornerback Donte Jackson earned his first interception of 2017, while fellow corner Greedy Williams secured his fifth.
Now, LSU awaits its bowl placement. With Auburn, Alabama and Georgia all looking poised to earn College Football Playoff or New Year’s Six bids, LSU once again seems likely to land in the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, the same place the Tigers played last year. Potential opponents in that game could range from Notre Dame to Big Ten opponents Northwestern and Michigan State to ACC schools such as Virginia Tech.
Bowl announcements will be made following next weekend’s conference championship games.
