NEW ORLEANS — Cam Cameron’s visit to Edna Karr High School on Wednesday had multiple levels attached to it.
For one, LSU’s offensive coordinator was doing his homework on one of the area’s top wide receivers, Rayce McMath, as the Tigers have long shown an interest in the 6-foot-3, 200-pounder and believe he’ll be an ideal fit in the team’s newly implemented short-passing game.
But if Cameron is taking notes, then quarterbacks are usually involved.
LSU has also kept close tabs on quarterback Aldon Clark, who the team views as one of its No. 1A options should one of its current commitments waver over the next few months, a source close to the situation told SEC Country.
Clark, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound pro-style prospect, holds offers from Memphis, SMU and Arkansas State, among others, while also generating interest from numerous in-state programs.
The Tigers currently have one of the nation’s top quarterback situations with Lowell Narcisse, the nation’s No. 5 dual-threat prospect, and Myles Brennan, the No. 17 pro-style prospect in the Class of 2017.
But LSU’s interest in Clark dates back to his standout junior campaign, and Cameron continues to keep tabs on the New Orleans prospect.
The offensive coordinator watched Clark and McMath work out for about 30 minutes on Wednesday morning as the two went through the entire route tree. Cameron watched Clark go through his progressions, while also checking out McMath running routes.
The way the drills were set up, Cameron was able to watch McMath run routes against a defender, but also see how Clark could read the defense and adjust to what he saw.
Cameron asked that both Clark and McMath attend LSU’s camps this summer, beginning next month, and McMath believes his quarterback could very soon draw an offer.
“I know he (Cameron) likes Aldon,” McMath said. “Aldon was putting the ball on point this morning. He could probably get that offer at any time, just like me.”
