BATON ROUGE, La. — Things keep rolling LSU’s way.
LSU (6-2, 4-1 SEC) defeated Ole Miss 40-24 Saturday, marking the Tigers’ third straight win since a surprise upset loss to Troy. Because of the Ole Miss win, LSU jumped two spots in the Amway USA Today Coaches Poll, landing at No. 23 after spending last week at No. 25. LSU is one of five SEC teams ranked in the Coaches Poll, along with Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M and Auburn.
LSU’s win over Ole Miss was an impressive one. The Tigers put up more than 600 yards of total offense and held Ole Miss’ top-flight passing offense to fewer than 200 yards, joining Alabama as the only teams to do so this season. Running backs Derrius Guice and Darrel Williams both had memorable evenings, as Guice rushed for 276 yards, 9 yards shy of tying the LSU single-game record he set last season, and Williams became the first player in school history to rush for 100 yards and have 100 receiving yards in the same game.
Quarterback Danny Etling was 9-for-13, throwing for 200 yards and 2 touchdowns and rushing for a third touchdown. Kicker Connor Culp connected on all four of his attempts, with a long of 47 yards.
Defensive backs John Battle, Grant Delpit and Kevin Toliver II all came down with interceptions off Ole Miss quarterback Shea Patterson. Delpit led the squad with 9 tackles, while Battle added 7 of his own. Edge rusher Arden Key finally looked like himself Saturday, finishing with 2 sacks and 6 tackles.
LSU gets a bye week this week, giving the Tigers an extra week to prepare for No. 1 Alabama on Nov. 4. Alabama has beaten the Tigers six times in a row dating back to the 2012 Sugar Bowl when the Tide shut out LSU to win a national championship. This is Alabama’s longest win streak over the Tigers since an 11-game streak from 1971-81. This will likely be the fourth time in seven games that Alabama comes into this game as the nation’s No. 1 team.
A game time hasn’t officially been announced for LSU-Alabama yet, but CBS announcer Gary Danielson hinted the game will be played in primetime on CBS.
