It became a make-or-break situation pretty quickly in The Plains, and the LSU defense was up to the task.
Kendell Beckwith was in the backfield at the snap on third-and-goal, forcing Auburn coach Gus Malzahn to decide to kick a fourth consecutive field goal or go for it on fourth down before the half.
Malzahn gambled and went for it, but reserve defensive back John Battle made a key stop to force a turnover on downs. In doing so, LSU preserved a 9-7 deficit heading into intermission.
LSU’s defense was gassed after the home Tigers upped the tempo in the second quarter, but it managed to regain its composure when it counted the most.
