The LSU family suffered a loss on Saturday. Sid Ortis died Saturday morning after battling with osteosarcoma, otherwise known as bone cancer.
Ortis lived in Alabama but was an avid LSU fan. The 16-year-old was diagnosed with bone cancer in August 2014. Ortis forged a special bond with LSU coach Les Miles, who first reached out to Ortis with a phone call in March.
Miles then invited Ortis and his family to attend LSU’s 45-21 win over Auburn from the coaches’ box. Ortis clearly enjoyed his visit to Baton Rouge, La.

Miles called Ortis last week after he was admitted into hospice care to offer some inspiring words of encouragement. Miles even asked for a solemn request. Miles had made plans to invite Ortis to attend this weekend’s game between LSU and Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
“When you get to Heaven, save a spot for me,” Miles said to Ortis.
