Bayou Bengal Briefing: Give us your thoughts on the tweaked LSU football jerseys?
Welcome to the Bayou Bengal Briefing, SEC Country’s daily morning column covering LSU football with beat writer Nick Suss. Today we vote on uniforms, clean up some old news, watch an impressive trick shot and more. Enjoy!
LSU football: Dawn of the stripes
The LSU football team might have debuted some new-ish uniforms Tuesday. Well, they’re almost exactly the same, unless you’re a hardcore uni-snob.
Derrius Guice and Danny Etling appeared in some photos on social media Tuesday rocking LSU’s classic white uniforms, only with the shoulder stripes cut off at the collarbone instead of the armpit. As I’ve posted about in the past, I don’t care one lick about uniforms. But there are a lot of people who do, and Tuesday was a really slow news day.
So here we are. What do you think of the new jerseys? Vote in the poll below. We’ll discuss your answers in Thursday’s Bayou Bengal Briefing.
The follow up
In the Bayou Bengal Briefing on Tuesday, we talked about LSU linebacker Jacob Phillips and the bizarre saga he went through Monday with false accusations being lofted his way.
Well, Phillips reached out to SEC Country’s own Sam Spiegelman on Tuesday to clear his name. Specifically, Phillips told Sam “It’s not true and I didn’t do it.” So, uh, that should be that.
Again, don’t automatically take anyone at face value. But since there’s no investigation, he seems mostly exonerated. I doubt there will be any more updates to this story. But if there are, you’ll find them here.
A recruiting note
The LSU football team’s recruiting class of 2018 is already in pretty good shape, with 22 players committed. The Tigers are expected to take 26 kids in this year’s class, so that leaves four names to fill out the list.
In his daily post Tuesday, Spiegelman predicted that these will be the four names LSU latches onto:
- 3-star tight end Glenn Beal
- 4-star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase
- 5-star cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr.
- 5-star wide receiver Terrance Marshall Jr.
Watch out for those names, especially those two at the bottom. Adding two more 5-stars to this already deep class would end up paying off huge for Ed Orgeron in his first full recruiting cycle as LSU football coach. And, as always, you can find all of Sam’s daily pieces by clicking here.
This was a cool thing to watch
Former LSU basketball player and Philadelphia 76ers star of the future Ben Simmons did a cool thing Tuesday.
Yes. That is Simmons using his right hand to swish a full-court heave while kids and adults alike ooh and ahh in astonishment. Simmons looks healthy. I know he won’t have to take shots like that for the 76ers. But if he can show off the prowess he did at LSU on a young and talented Sixers team that includes Joel Embiid and Markelle Fultz, he might be the best former Tiger the NBA has seen since Shaquille O’Neal.
And that’s saying something.

Football season wya…

If you don’t speak youths, “wya” stands for “where you at?” And yes. It is rather annoying that we’re in a dead period between all sports, let alone football. But really, we’re only two months away. And that’s a lot closer than we were a couple of months ago.
As LSU punter Josh Growden pointed out.
60 days mate.

Today in made-up holidays
How do we come down from the Fourth of July? Well, according to the folks at NationalDayCalendar.com, today is “National Bikini Day.” So, uh, that’s how.
Ladies, if you get the chance, show off your favorite bikinis today. Men, if you want to rock a bikini too, go for it. Get in the spirit. There’s nothing stopping you.
Because, let’s face it: Everyone looks great in a bikini. Even time-traveling British spies from the 1960s with more chest hair than a bear.
Try to get that out of your mind today.
