BATON ROUGE, La. — Darrel Williams and Justin McMillan were some of the standouts in the LSU football team’s second scrimmage of the spring Saturday afternoon.
According to LSU football coach Ed Orgeron, LSU’s offense won the scrimmage for the second week in a row, beating the inexperienced LSU defense with a potent run game and a deep-striking pass attack.
As it has all spring, LSU rotated its quarterbacks, but Danny Etling received most of the first-team reps. Regular running back Derrius Guice was held out with his nagging ankle injury, leaving Williams, the second-team senior, to receive most of the carries. LSU’s second-team offense was led by McMillan and Nick Brossette.
Here are some of the stats LSU football players put up in the scrimmage, along with some quotes from Orgeron about which players stood out:
LSU football spring scrimmage stats
- Danny Etling: 4-for-10, 133 yards, 1 TD
- Justin McMillan: 5-for-6, 79 yards, 1 TD
- Lindsey Scott: 2-for-3, 23 yards
“We’re still working (the quarterbacks) out,” Orgeron said. “Obviously Danny, Justin and Lindsey got most of the reps today. We made some big plays in the passing game today. It’s a tribute to (receivers coach) Mickey (Joseph) and to (offensive coordinator) Matt (Canada) and the coaching staff.”
- Darrel Williams: 20 carries, 93 yards
- Nick Brossette: 14 carries, 72 yards
- Total rushing: 66 carries, 391 yards
“We’re basically running from a spread offense,” Orgeron said. “Very little I-formation. Very little pro formation. The blocking schemes are very similar. There’s a lot of carryover from what we’re trying to do. I think it’s (Darrel’s) time. I think the offense fits him. The coaching style of Tommie Robinson is starting to show. All those things combined.”
- Drake Davis: 1 catch, 39 yards, TD
- Russell Gage: 3 catches, 59 yards
- Dee Anderson: 2 catches, 30 yards
Orgeron didn’t reveal full statistical summaries for all the wide receivers, but did mention he was impressed with the way D.J. Chark played, as he has been all spring.
“We’re very proud of our offense,” Orgeron said to sum everything up. “Tremendous day out there. Outstanding job by the offensive line. Darrel Williams had an outstanding day. This is the second scrimmage in a way that they won.”
