LSU football: Tigers ranked in the preseason coaches poll

BATON ROUGE, La. — The first preseason edition of the Amway Coaches Poll was released Thursday, and the LSU football team finds itself in the mix.

LSU ranks No. 12 in the poll, second among SEC teams behind only Alabama. The Tigers finished the 2016 season ranked 14th in the final Coaches Poll after defeating Louisville in the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl.

At SEC Media Days, LSU was projected by the media to finish third in the SEC West behind Alabama and Auburn. This is the same place LSU finished at the end of the regular season in 2016, with losses to Alabama, Auburn and Florida keeping LSU out of a New Year’s Six bowl. Those same three teams are three of the four opponents on LSU’s 2017 schedule who are ranked in this year’s preseason poll. Alabama is ranked No. 1, while Auburn is seeded 13th and Florida is ranked 16th. Additionally, Tennessee is ranked 24th.

LSU has finished lower than its preseason ranking every year since 2011, the last time LSU competed in the national championship game. This includes a season ago, when the Tigers were ranked in the preseason top 10 but dropped quickly after a Week 1 loss to Wisconsin and a Week 4 loss versus Auburn.

The Tigers open the 2017 season in Houston on Sept. 2 versus BYU. It’ll be the first time that LSU and BYU have ever faced off against one another in football. That game is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
