The drought has ended. LSU men’s basketball has cracked a top 25 poll for the first time since 2009, according to LSU Basketball. The Tigers came in at No. 19 in Thursday’s Preseason Coaches Poll released by USA Today.
LSU will try to build off of a 22-11 season and its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since the ’09 season. The Tigers also landed a special recruit in Ben Simmons, who could be the No. 1 pick in next year’s NBA Draft.
The Tigers received 163 points from the voters and are 10 points ahead of fellow SEC foe, Vanderbilt, who was ranked one spot behind LSU.
Three SEC teams were ranked inside the top 25. Kentucky tied with North Carolina for the top spot in the USA Today Preseason Coach’s Poll. The Wildcats have reloaded after a 38-1 campaign that featured six 2015 NBA draft picks.
The Tigers will get an early shot to prove themselves in the national spotlight when they participate in the Legends Classic at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. LSU will play Marquette in the first round Nov. 23 and then the winner or loser of NC State vs. Arizona State the next day in the two-game tournament.
It is on quick reference believe to be first time LSU has been ranked in the Coaches Poll since the final poll of 2009 (20 USAT, 19 AP).
