LSU players react to controversial Hurricane Katrina banner
LSU didn’t need any extra motivation for Saturday night’s titanic showdown with No. 4 Alabama. But a crude banner urging Alabama to “finish what Katrina started” might give the Tigers some extra inspiration.
Two current players and former Tigers wideout and current New York Giants phenom Odell Beckham Jr. posted about the banner on social media with a picture New Orleans native Leonard Fournette.
Linebackers Donnie Alexander and Deion Jones, who both hail from New Orleans, echoed Beckham Jr.’s theme on Twitter: Hurricane Katrina made them “savages.”
“Katrina Made An Animal Out Of Me So You Know What That’s Bout!!!!” Alexander posted.
“Katrina made SAVAGES!” Jones tweeted.
Fournette will likely let his play do the talking about the banner, which was received so poorly that Alabama actually issued a statement about it. Earlier in the season, Fournette was featured on ESPN’s College GameDay and discussed how he and his family survived Katrina when he was 10 years old.
LSU could be playing with even more emotion on Saturday night. Forget SEC and national title ramifications, the Tigers are playing for the pride of New Orleans and Louisiana.
