LSU rises in AP Top 25 poll after 27-0 win over BYU

BATON ROUGE, La. — LSU took its place as the second-best team in the SEC in the AP Top 25 this week.

The Tigers jumped one spot from their place as No. 13 in the preseason poll up to No. 12 in this week’s poll. But in doing so, they supplanted Auburn, which ranked No. 12 in the preseason poll and dropped to No. 13 after a 41-7 win over Georgia Southern in Week 1. Only No. 1 Alabama ranked ahead of LSU among SEC teams in this week’s AP poll.

It was difficult not to be impressed by LSU’s performance in the season opener. No team had a larger time of possession advantage than LSU in the opening weekend, and Penn State was the only other team that shut out an FBS opponent. Impressively, LSU did all of this while starting five and playing 17 true freshmen, which is likely a school record.

Running back Derrius Guice worked his way back into the swing of things, rushing 27 times for 120 yards and two touchdowns. But quarterback Danny Etling might’ve been even more impressive, completing 14 of his 17 passes. Of his three incompletions, two were balls thrown away out of the back of the end zone and the third was a dropped pass. More importantly, neither Etling nor any Tigers player turned the ball over against a team that ranked second nationally in turnovers created in 2016.

While the offense jelled, the defense was downright dominant. BYU never crossed the 50-yard line, as defensive coordinator Dave Aranda’s unit held BYU to negative rushing yards and fewer than 100 yards of total offense. This included two sacks from senior linebacker Corey Thompson and an interception from redshirt freshman cornerback Greedy Williams.

LSU will return to the field Saturday night to against FCS foe Chattanooga in Baton Rouge. The game will be played at 6:30 p.m. CT and be broadcast nationally on the SEC Network Alternate Channel. Stay posted to SEC Country throughout the week for news and updates about the LSU football team.
