Ben Simmons is largely considered the consensus top pick in this week’s NBA Draft taking place in Brooklyn. It has been that way for much of the season even as the Tigers struggled and ultimately failed to make the postseason.
Simmons has an interesting background. He grew up in Australia as his father became a stalwart basketball player in the NBL in Australia. He then moved back.
Things are coming full circle with the NBA Draft in Brooklyn, near where Simmons’ father grew up in New York. Ben Simmons’ NBA journey is just beginning.
With Sunday being Father’s Day, Simmons penned a letter thanking his father for his support, guidance and inspiration in getting him to this point.
“Dear Dad,” Simmons begins. “On this Father’s Day, I wanted to take a moment and express how truly blessed I am to call you my ‘Pops.’ My entire life you have been there for me, pushing me when I needed pushing, coaching me when I needed coaching and giving me a shoulder to lean on when I just needed my dad.
“Every time I step on the court, I take pride in knowing my toughness is a family trait that I got from you. I have learned so much from you — about basketball, about life and, most importantly, what it means to be a good person. A man of integrity, someone who treats people with respect and kindness. You are someone who people look up to and admire for all the right reasons. I try every day to be that man.”

The NBA Draft takes place Thursday and it is very likely Simmons will hear his name called first. This was a touching tribute to his father on a special day for fathers everywhere, soon-to-be NBA superstar or not.
