Leonard Fournette didn’t earn a trip to New York City in 2015, but should we count on the LSU running back being there in 2016?
Fournette is the early odds-on favorite to win the Heisman Trophy in 2016, according to USA TODAY Sports’ Danny Sheridan, getting 2:1 odds.
Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and Stanford running back Christian McCafferty are behind Fournette with 3:1 odds; Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield and Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire are next at 8:1; while Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett and Florida State running back Dalvin Cook round out his group of early favorites at 10:1.
Fournette will be a junior in 2016, coming off a sophomore campaign in which he led the NCAA with 162.8 rushing yards per game.
Of course, Watson set the record for most total yards in a national championship game earlier this week. He and McCafferty were Heisman finalists this past year, finishing behind Alabama running back Derrick Henry.
Mayfield, Zaire and Barrett will all spearhead high-scoring offenses with the Sooners, Irish and Buckeyes, respectively. Cook finished sixth in the NCAA in rushing this past season (1,691 yards) behind the likes of Henry (No. 1) and Fournette (No. 3).
