Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Eye on the Tigers, a rundown of everything happening in LSU Tigers recruiting, with Sam Spiegelman. Today, we discuss the main reason why LSU cracked 4-star defensive tackle Michael Thompson‘s newly released top five and what the Tigers’ chances are with the coveted lineman.
Why LSU made Thompson’s top 5
BEAVERTON, Ore. — Michael Thompson is the nation’s No. 2 defensive tackle, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. But what the recruiting rankings don’t show is the 4-star prospect is quite the mama’s boy.
Thompson (Parkway North, St. Louis) is close with his mother, who is playing a vital role in his college decision. His mother accompanied the 6-foot-4, 291-pound prospect to Baton Rouge for junior day earlier in the spring and left with a high opinion of Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron.
Thompson’s mother is protective of her son. For that, she is a harsh critic and is big on first impressions. Orgeron checked off that box during their visit.
“She really likes Coach Orgeron. That’s her man,” Thompson told SEC Country at Nike’s The Opening Finals in Oregon. “She wants me to go somewhere where I’ll be in good hands. She likes that Coach Orgeron is a players-first coach and how he took care of us, how he set up our visit and how he invited us into his office.
“For my mom, she’s is all about first impressions. She judges people off that first impression and I think he [Orgeron] succeeded in that. She knows that he will take care of me if I go there.”
Thompson could make a decision soon, but the blue-chip Missouri defensive tackle won’t reveal his plans until National Signing Day.
A return visit to Baton Rouge is a possibility, but none is scheduled. In fact, Thompson has not decided which colleges he’ll be visiting this summer or fall yet.
While Orgeron made an impression on his mother during the unofficial visit, outside linebackers coach Dennis Johnson has kept the Tigers in the loop with Thompson since. Johnson, too, is ensuring that both Thompson and his mother feel prioritized by the coaching staff.
“I talk to Coach DJ a lot. We’ve got a good relationship with him and with Coach Orgeron,” Thompson said. “He is always talking to me how when I can get there and always asks how I’m doing and how’s my mom.”
Thompson released his top 5 on July 13, which included LSU, Alabama, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio State.
