When LSU plays Southern Miss this Saturday, safety Rickey Jefferson won’t be on the field. And that certainly won’t be the only game he misses, as Tigers interim coach Ed Orgeron said Thursday that Jefferson broke his leg Wednesday in practice.
“I don’t know [when he’ll be back],” Orgeron said. “He just kind of let it whip and broke his leg yesterday. It’s unfortunate. It wasn’t in the live contact. It was in a thud period. We wish him the best. He’s going to try to be back, I can say that.”
In Jefferson’s stead, LSU plans to start John Battle, a junior from Hallandale, Fla. Though it’s never easy to replace a starter, Orgeron said that he and his staff have more confidence in Battle than they would the average backup.
“There was a point that we discussed John Battle starting. Him and Rickey were tight,” Orgeron said. “Now with John Battle starting, we think that John is a smart young man. We think he’s going to come in there and play. Although we’re going to miss Rickey, I don’t think we’re going to skip a beat.”
